Our food

The dishes we love

What is lau lau? +

Lau lau is a traditional Hawaiian dish made by wrapping pork and chicken in taro leaves, then slow-steaming until meltingly tender. Our signature lau lau is half pork and half chicken — the way we think it's meant to be enjoyed. We also offer a chicken-only lau lau, and a vegetarian lau lau by request. It has been a staple at Yama's since we opened in 1980.

What is haupia? +

Haupia is a traditional Hawaiian coconut dessert with a smooth, firm, gelatin-like texture — think of it as a coconut pudding square. At Yama's, we bake our haupia fresh in small batches daily and love getting creative with flavors like Okinawan sweet potato haupia. HAWAIʻI Magazine named our haupia the best in Hawaiʻi.

How fresh is your poke? +

Very fresh. Our fish comes directly from the Honolulu fish auction each morning — sashimi-grade ahi. We use high-quality fish and season it so the sauce complements the fish, not the other way around. You can actually taste the quality of the fish in every bite. We mix in small batches throughout the day so every scoop is at its peak.
